This replica is based on a silver stater struck in the Greek city of Velia (Hyele) in Lucania, Southern Italy, during the late 4th to early 3rd century BC. These coins belong to one of the most iconic Greek issues of Magna Graecia, reflecting the strength, identity, and cultural pride of the Velian people.

Obverse:
The obverse features the helmeted head of Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, shown in classical Greek style. Her Corinthian helmet is pushed back on her head, with realistic facial features and flowing locks of hair visible beneath. Athena served as the protective deity of Velia and symbolized both the military power and the cultural refinement of the city.

Reverse:
The reverse depicts a lion walking right, the civic emblem of Velia. Beneath the lion appears the ethnic inscription ΥΕΛΗΤΩΝ (“of the people of Velia”). The lion symbol traces back to the city’s Phocaean founders, connecting Velia to its Ionian heritage.
This design reflects strength, independence, and the city’s influence in regional trade and maritime networks.

Historical Context:
Velia was a prosperous Greek colony in Southern Italy, known for its philosophy (home of Parmenides and Zeno) and strong identity. Around 300–280 BC, the city produced a series of beautifully engraved silver staters featuring Athena and the lion. These coins circulated widely throughout Magna Graecia and the wider Greek world, demonstrating Velia’s importance in commerce and culture.
