This bust reproduces the Albani Socrates, one of the most famous ancient portraits of the Greek philosopher Socrates (469–399 BC). The original marble, a Roman copy of a lost Greek original from the 4th century BC, is preserved in the Capitoline Museums, Rome.
Historical Background
Socrates is remembered as the father of Western philosophy. He taught through questioning, urging his students to examine life, truth, and virtue. His most famous pupil was Plato, who later passed on his ideas to Aristotle, forming the foundation of Western thought.
Unlike the idealized depictions of gods and heroes, Socrates was often portrayed with unconventional, even satyr-like features, emphasizing his inner wisdom over physical beauty. His busts became symbols of intellectual courage, since he chose death over abandoning his principles when condemned by Athens.
This reproduction draws from those Roman copies, preserving the severe and thoughtful character of the philosopher who declared: “The unexamined life is not worth living.”
