This replica is based on one of the most striking and symbolic coin types issued by Seleukos I Nikator, founder of the Seleucid Empire. Struck shortly after 305 BC, this design presents Seleukos as both a heroic conqueror and rightful successor to Alexander the Great.
Obverse:
The portrait shows a heroic bust wearing a helmet made of panther skin, decorated with a bull’s horns and ear. This imagery blends Seleukos with:
- Dionysos, the god who rode a panther and conquered India
- Alexander the Great, who associated himself with Dionysos
- Seleukos himself, who campaigned in India and wished to present himself as both a “second Alexander” and “third Dionysos”
The result is one of the most elaborate symbolic portraits in Hellenistic coinage.
Reverse:
The reverse depicts Nike, goddess of victory, crowning a trophy of arms. After a major battle, captured weapons were hung on a tree trunk to form a human-like trophy, dedicated as a divine offering.
This trophy almost certainly alludes to Seleukos’ decisive victory at the Battle of Ipsus (301 BC), where his Indian war elephants played a key role in defeating his rivals and securing his empire.
Historical Background:
Seleukos I Nikator (312–280 BC) was one of Alexander’s most capable generals and went on to rule a vast empire stretching from Asia Minor to India. This coin type reflects his political messaging: presenting himself as hero, conqueror, and divine-favored king.
