This replica coin is based on a bronze sestertius issued under Emperor Tiberius (14–37 CE), the second Roman emperor. It emphasizes Pietas (duty, loyalty, and devotion) and honors the deified first emperor Augustus, Tiberius’ stepfather and predecessor.
Historical Background:
After Augustus’ death in 14 CE, he was deified by the Senate, becoming Divus Augustus. Tiberius, who inherited his position, reinforced his legitimacy by honoring Augustus through temples, cult practices, and coinage. The imagery of Pietas linked Tiberius’ rule to traditional Roman values of duty to the gods, family, and state.
Design & Symbolism:
-
Obverse (Front):
Pietas seated left, raising her right hand in an act of devotion. Below, the inscription PIETAS highlights the theme of duty and reverence. The surrounding legend reads:
TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVST PM TR POT XXIIII (“Tiberius Caesar, son of the divine Augustus, Pontifex Maximus, holder of tribunician power for the 24th time”). -
Reverse (Back):
A temple with four columns, inside which stand statues of Augustus and Livia (or Augustus alone in some varieties). The legend reads DIVO AVGVSTO S C, dedicating the coin to the deified Augustus with approval of the Senate.
