This replica coin reproduces a silver denarius struck in 82 BCE by the moneyer C. Mamilius Limetanus during the late Roman Republic. It belongs to a turbulent period of civil wars between the supporters of Sulla and Marius. The imagery celebrates both divine ancestry and military strength, common themes in Roman Republican coinage that reinforced family prestige and political legitimacy.

Historical Background:
The gens Mamilii claimed descent from Mercury (Hermes) through the legendary hero Mamilia of Tusculum. Coinage was one of the key tools for Roman magistrates to display their family heritage and political messages, especially in times of unrest. This issue honored Mercury and emphasized Rome’s martial virtues.

Design & Symbolism:

  • Obverse (Front):
Head of Mercury (the Roman god of commerce, communication, and travel) wearing a winged petasus (hat). Behind him appears the caduceus (staff with intertwined serpents), his sacred attribute. Mercury symbolized speed, trade, and divine guidance.
  • Reverse (Back):
A warrior in military attire, holding a spear and leading a horse. The legend C·MAMIL LIMETAN identifies the moneyer, C. Mamilius Limetanus. The image represented military readiness and Roman virtue, and may allude to the family’s legendary service to the Republic.
