This replica coin reproduces a silver denarius issued under Emperor Claudius (41–54 CE) to commemorate his victories in Germania. Claudius, the fourth Roman emperor, expanded the empire’s frontiers and is best remembered for the conquest of Britain in 43 CE, but he also celebrated earlier victories against Germanic tribes through coinage.

Historical Background:
After ascending the throne following the assassination of Caligula, Claudius sought to strengthen his legitimacy by honoring both his own achievements and those of his family. His coinage often displayed monuments and triumphal arches, underscoring Rome’s military dominance and imperial glory.

Design & Symbolism:

  • Obverse (Front):
Laureate head of Emperor Claudius facing right, with the surrounding legend naming him TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP (“Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus, Pontifex Maximus, holder of tribunician power, Imperator”).
  • Reverse (Back):
A triumphal arch surmounted by equestrian and trophy figures, with the inscription DE GERMANIS (“Concerning the Germans”). This symbolized Claudius’ claimed victory and Rome’s supremacy over Germanic peoples.
