This bust represents Plato (c. 427–347 BC), the great philosopher of ancient Greece and one of the most influential thinkers in Western history. With his thoughtful expression and flowing cloak, the bust is inspired by Roman copies of lost Greek originals, which preserved the likeness of the master for centuries.

Historical Background

Plato, a student of Socrates and teacher of Aristotle, founded the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. His works, including the Republic, Symposium, and Timaeus, shaped philosophy, politics, and metaphysics for more than two millennia.

Ancient busts of Plato were created in the Roman era, modeled on Greek originals from the 4th century BC, idealizing him as a figure of wisdom and authority. This modern replica continues that tradition in a new medium.
