This plaster bust represents Pericles (c. 495–429 BC), the Athenian general and statesman who led Athens during its Golden Age. Pericles oversaw the construction of the Parthenon, expanded democracy, and guided Athens through its height of cultural and political power.

The bust type, known as “Pericles with the Corinthian helmet,” derives from a lost bronze original by the sculptor Kresilas (5th century BC). Surviving Roman copies (2nd century AD) are preserved today in the British Museum (London), the Vatican Museums (Rome), and the Altes Museum (Berlin).

Pericles is shown wearing a Corinthian helmet, pushed back on his head, a symbol of his military authority as strategos (general). The portrait combines realism and idealism, capturing both his intellectual leadership and his role as Athens’ protector.

Historical Background

Pericles (c. 495–429 BC) was one of the most influential figures of classical Athens. Under his leadership, the city saw the construction of the Parthenon, the flourishing of drama, philosophy, and art, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
