This plaster relief depicts the celebrated encounter between Alexander the Great and the Cynic philosopher Diogenes of Sinope. According to legend, Alexander approached Diogenes and offered to grant him any wish. Diogenes, unbothered by worldly power, simply replied: “Stand out of my sunlight.”

The scene is a striking moral allegory — contrasting the vast authority of the conqueror with the serene independence of the philosopher.

The original marble relief, titled La Rencontre d’Alexandre et de Diogène (Meeting of Alexander and Diogenes), was created around 1680 by Pierre Puget (1620–1694), one of France’s greatest Baroque sculptors. Today, the masterpiece is housed in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. MR 2776).

This reproduction faithfully echoes Puget’s dramatic composition: Alexander on horseback, surrounded by soldiers and banners, confronting the reclining figure of Diogenes in his humble state. The relief embodies Baroque dynamism, moral depth, and classical storytelling.
