This replica is based on the silver tetradrachms issued in Macedonia after its defeat by Rome, during the period when the kingdom was reorganized into districts (merides) under Roman protectorate rule. These coins were struck between 167 and 149 BC, before Macedonia was formally annexed as a Roman province.

Obverse – Artemis on Macedonian Shield
The obverse shows a diademed and draped bust of Artemis, goddess of the hunt and protector of nature, facing right. A bow and quiver rest over her shoulder, reinforcing her martial and protective role. The portrait is placed at the center of a Macedonian shield, decorated with stars and crescents, symbolizing Macedonian military tradition and identity even under Roman oversight.

Reverse – Club of Herakles and Oak Wreath
The reverse depicts the club of Herakles, a powerful emblem of strength, heroism, and royal legitimacy, long associated with the Macedonian kings who claimed descent from Herakles. The club is surrounded by an oak wreath, sacred to Zeus, symbolizing authority, endurance, and continuity. A thunderbolt appears as an additional sign of divine power, while monograms and inscriptions identify the issuing district.

Historical Context
After Rome defeated King Perseus in the Third Macedonian War (168 BC), Macedonia lost its independence and was divided into four administrative regions. Coinage such as this reflects a transitional period — Macedonian symbols and gods remained prominent, but political power now rested firmly under Roman control. These tetradrachms circulated widely in the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean during a time of profound political change.
