This replica is inspired by some of the most iconic mythological designs found on ancient coinage from Knossos and Crete, featuring the famous myths of Europa and the Minotaur’s Labyrinth. Ancient Cretan cities issued coins with these legendary themes during the Classical and Hellenistic periods, celebrating the island’s deep mythological heritage.

Obverse:
The front side shows Europa riding the bull, a vivid depiction of the myth in which Zeus—transformed into a majestic bull—carries the Phoenician princess across the sea to Crete. Beneath them, stylized waves emphasize the dramatic moment of abduction and journey. The inscription ΕΥΡΩΠΑ – ΖΕΥΣ (“Europa – Zeus”) identifies the myth.

Reverse:
The reverse displays the famous Labyrinth of Knossos, represented as a complex square maze. At the center appears the inscription ΚΝΩΣΙΩΝ (“Of the Knossians”).
This symbol alludes to the legendary maze built by Daedalus, home of the Minotaur, and one of the central stories of Greek mythology involving Theseus and Ariadne.

Historical Background:
Knossos was the ancient heart of Minoan civilization, and its mythological imagery influenced many later Cretan coin types. Europa, Zeus, the Labyrinth, and the Minotaur remain some of the most enduring symbols of Crete’s ancient identity.
While no single ancient coin combined both of these scenes, this replica brings together two of the island’s most famous mythological motifs in one design.
