This coin is a replica of the famous Elephant Denarius, first struck by Julius Caesar in 49–48 BCE, during the opening of the Roman Civil War. This was the first coinage to feature Julius Caesar’s name, issued after he crossed the Rubicon in January 49 BC and took possession of the bullion reserves in the state treasury, abandoned by the fleeing senate and their leader, Pompey the Great. It is one of the earliest issues in Caesar’s name and served as a powerful piece of political propaganda in the late Republic.
- Obverse (front): An elephant trampling a serpent with the inscription CAESAR. This symbolized Caesar’s strength, victory of good over evil, and his power to crush Rome’s enemies.
- Reverse (back): Sacred priestly symbols — a libation cup, aspergillum (sprinkler), axe with wolf’s head, and apex (priest’s cap). These emphasized Caesar’s role as Pontifex Maximus, the chief priest of Rome, underscoring his religious and political authority.
The original coin broadcast Caesar’s dual identity as both military leader and religious authority, asserting his legitimacy at a turning point in Roman history.
