This plaster bust is a reproduction after the Renaissance masterpiece of Julius Caesar sculpted by Andrea Ferrucci (1465–1526) around 1512–1514. The original marble is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Portrayed in military armor adorned with a Medusa head (Gorgoneion) and an eagle, Caesar appears as both a commanding general and a legendary statesman. Ferrucci’s bust reflects the Renaissance admiration for Roman antiquity, blending historical likeness with symbolic imagery that celebrated power, courage, and divine favor.
Historical Background
- Julius Caesar (100–44 BC) was Rome’s most famous general and dictator, whose reforms and conquests transformed the Roman Republic into the foundation of the Roman Empire.
- During the Renaissance, artists revived his image as a symbol of leadership, intellect, and destiny.
- Andrea Ferrucci, a Florentine sculptor, reinterpreted Caesar with a balance of classical severity and Renaissance humanism.
