This bust depicts Hercules (Heracles), the legendary Greek hero celebrated for his superhuman strength and the completion of the Twelve Labors. The downcast, contemplative expression reflects his dual nature: both a mighty warrior and a weary mortal enduring the burdens of fate.
Historical Background
The design is inspired by the Farnese Hercules, a colossal marble statue created in the early 3rd century AD by Glykon of Athens. That statue was itself a Roman copy of an earlier Greek bronze by Lysippos (4th century BC).
Discovered in the Baths of Caracalla in Rome in 1546, the Farnese Hercules became one of the most admired sculptures of the Renaissance and beyond, influencing countless artists and replicas. Today, the original resides in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
This bust version captures the distinctive features of Hercules: the powerful build, thick beard, and pensive expression, symbolizing not just brute force but also endurance and human struggle.
