This replica is based on a silver tetradrachm issued during the reign of Demetrius I Poliorcetes, king of Macedonia from 294 to 288 BC and one of the most dynamic rulers of the Hellenistic age. Son of Antigonus the One-Eyed and famed for his mastery of siege warfare, Demetrius became known as Poliorcetes — “The Besieger.”
Obverse
The front features the diademed and horned head of Demetrius facing right. The bull horns are symbolic of divine power and heroic status, recalling Alexander the Great’s association with Zeus-Ammon. The portrait reflects the bold and charismatic style of Hellenistic royal imagery.
Reverse
The reverse shows Poseidon Pelagaios, god of the sea, standing to the left with his foot placed on a rock. He holds a trident in one hand, emphasizing maritime strength and naval authority. Small monograms appear around the figure, identifying the issuing officials. The inscription ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ (“Of King Demetrius”) proclaims the ruler’s authority.
Historical Context
These coins were minted near the end of Demetrius’ Macedonian reign, a period of intense political conflict among the successors of Alexander the Great. Demetrius was famous for his naval power and ambitious campaigns, and the imagery of Poseidon reflects his control over the seas and his aspirations to dominate the eastern Mediterranean. Although his rule was short-lived, Demetrius left a strong legacy as one of the most colorful personalities of the Hellenistic world.
