This replica is based on one of the most distinctive Celtic coin types of ancient Europe: the “Baumreiter” (Tree-Rider) Tetradrachm, minted by Celtic tribes in the Danube region between 300 and 200 BC. These coins are known for their bold abstract style and imaginative reinterpretation of earlier Greek prototypes.

Obverse:
The obverse features a highly stylized male head, derived ultimately from Greek portrait coinage but reimagined in the abstract artistic language of the Iron Age Celts. Strong curves and simplified facial features give these coins their unmistakably Celtic character.

Reverse:
The reverse depicts a horseman riding beneath a tree, giving the type its German numismatic nickname “Baumreiter” — literally “tree rider.”
The rider often carries a spear or weapon, and the horse is rendered in a dynamic, flowing Celtic style. The tree above symbolizes life, protection, and possibly the sacred groves important in Celtic religion.

Historical Background:
From the 3rd to the 2nd century BC, Celtic tribes across Eastern Europe struck their own silver coinage inspired by Greek originals but transformed into a unique artistic tradition.
The “Tree-Rider” tetradrachms are among the most iconic of these Celtic issues. They reflect a blend of heroic imagery, nature symbolism, and abstract design typical of the La Tène cultural horizon.
