This detailed replica reproduces a section of the Great Altar of Pergamon, created in the 2nd century BC (c. 180–160 BC) under King Eumenes II of the Attalid dynasty. The altar originally stood in the city of Pergamon (modern-day Bergama, Turkey) and is now preserved in the Pergamon Museum, Berlin.

Scene Depicted

  • Center: The goddess Athena (goddess of wisdom and war) seizes the giant Alkyoneus by the hair, forcing him to the ground.
  • Left: Gaia, the earth goddess and mother of the giants, rises from the ground in anguish at the fate of her son.
  • Right: The winged goddess Nike (Victory) crowns Athena, symbolizing her triumph.
  • The relief captures the moment of divine victory in the mythological Gigantomachy — the cosmic battle between the Olympian gods and the Giants.

Historical Background

  • The Great Altar of Pergamon was one of the masterpieces of Hellenistic art, celebrated for its dramatic style and emotional intensity.
  • Built to honor Zeus and Athena, it also symbolized Pergamon’s political and military power.
  • The Gigantomachy theme represented the triumph of order (Olympian gods) over chaos (Giants), a metaphor for the Attalid dynasty’s victories over their enemies.
  • Today, the Pergamon Altar is considered one of the greatest monuments of classical antiquity.
